MLB roundup: Dodgers sign Justin Turner, Indians add Bryan LaHair

The Dodgers signed infielder Justin Turner to a minor league deal on Wednesday, according to Tim Dierkes of MLBTradeRumors.

Although the deal's terms have not been reported, the agreement does include an invite to major league camp in spring training, per Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times. Turner has played five major league seasons and batted .280/.319/.385 for the Mets over 86 games in 2013. He played all four infield positions for the Mets and will likely serve in the same role for the Dodgers, who could use some infield depth heading into 2014.

Former Cubs first baseman Bryan LaHair agreed to a minor league deal with the Indians on Wednesday, according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com. The contract includes an invite to major league spring training. LaHair last appeared in the majors in 2012 with the Cubs, when he hit .259/.334/.450 with 16 home runs and was named to the NL All-Star team after a strong first half. The 31-year-old first baseman played for the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks in Japan last season, batting .230/.306/.428 with 16 home runs in 111 games.

In Cleveland, LaHair may face an uphill battle to make the team with both Carlos Santana and Nick Swisher in line for some playing time at first base. If the Indians do play Santana at third base, however, a spot could open up on the roster for another corner infielder.

The Blue Jays have signed 16-year-old Dominican right-hander Hansel Rodriguez for $330,000, according to Baseball America's Ben Badler. After netting added international bonus pool space from the Angels in December, the Jays spent the extra money on Rodriguez, who went unsigned during last year's international signing period beginning on July 2. The 16-year-old Rodriguez already has a low-90s fastball and above-average curveball, which made him an attractive commodity. Per Badler, the Jays added the extra bonus pool money from the Angels specifically in order to sign Rodriguez.
