Spring training roundup: Jose Igelsias, Josh Beckett could start season on disabled list

Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias could land on the disabled list to start the 2014 season, according to Mlive's James Schmehl.

Iglesias, who hasn’t seen the field for two weeks, is dealing with injuries to both shins and saw a specialist on Friday. A previous doctor fitted Iglesias with orthotics to alleviate some of the pain, per Schmehl, but the pain continued to be serious enough to where Iglesias had to visit a chiropractor. The 24-year-old will be required to wear a “pain management” device for 24 hours before the team reviews the results and takes the next step.

The Tigers started minor leaguer Hernan Perez at shortstop on Friday and doubled up the Nationals, 12-6.

Beckett aggravates thumb injury

Dodgers starting pitcher Josh Beckett left after three innings of work on Friday as a result of a right thumb contusion and is now a candidate to begin the season on the 15-day disabled list, according to MLB.com's Ken Gurnick.

Beckett was supposed to go four innings against the Cubs but was bothered early by the injury when trying to throw breaking balls and later when gripping fastballs. The 33-year-old right-hander told Gurnick he plans to visit a doctor and take some time off, though he doesn't want to fall behind.

Beckett did not allow a run on Friday but gave up two walks and a hit. The Dodgers fell to the Cubs, 5-4.

Pence smacks two homers

Giants outfielder Hunter Pence hit a pair of solo home runs off of Rockies starter Christian Friedrich in San Francisco's 4-0 victory.

Pence took Friedrich deep in the second and fourth innings, giving himself as many home runs as the Rockies had hits in the game. He now has three home runs and a .724 slugging percentage this spring.

Madison Bumgarner held the Rockies split-squad to two hits in five scoreless innings. He struck out four and walked one.
