Dayan Viciedo trade rumors: Mariners interested in White Sox outfielder

The Mariners are looking to lengthen their lineup with the possible addition of the White Sox’ outfielder.

The Seattle Mariners and Chicago White Sox have had trade discussions recently centering on current Sox outfielder Dayan Viciedo, reports Bruce Levine of CBS Chicago.

The Mariners have been making a big push this offseason to get back into contention in the AL West, signing players like Robinson Cano and Corey Hart while trading for Logan Morrison. However, the team still appears to want one more big bat in the lineup and have identified Viciedo as a potential target.

Viciedo, who turns 25 on Monday, would likely take over in left field for the Mariners if they acquire him. He has not played another position defensively since 2011, when he spent a few games at first base in a partial season.

It would likely cost the Mariners a pretty penny to bring in Viciedo. Though he took a small step back last year, he is still very young, has four years of team control remaining and is bursting with potential. He will earn $2.8 million in 2014 as a first-time arbitration eligible super-two player.

The Mariners are clearly serious about Viciedo, having had top evaluators Ted Simmons and Pete Vuckovich watching him play during spring.

Viciedo hit .255/.300/.444 with 25 home runs in his first full season in 2012, but saw his power numbers drop in 2013 as he slugged just 14 homers.
