MLB news: Stephen Strasburg strikes out 12, Avisail Garcia will have season-ending surgery

Mike Redmond is a perceptive man. Stephen Strasburg was thoroughly dominant against Redmond's squad on Thursday, racking up 12 strikeouts in the Nationals' 7-1 victory.

Strasburg helped his club finish off a sweep of the Marlins by allowing only one run in 6⅔ innings. Marcell Ozuna's seventh-inning solo home run was the only damage against the 25-year-old right-hander, who retired 14 consecutive batters at one point before Adeiny Hechavarria reached on Ian Desmond's error in the fifth. Desmond atoned for his error three innings later with a grand slam to put the game away. Jayson Werth added a two-run shot for the Nats, who improved to 7-2 on the season.

Among Strasburg's strikeout victims was Giancarlo Stanton, who whiffed twice against the Nationals' ace as part of an 0-for-4 day. There was plenty of swinging and missing from everyone in the Miami lineup; Marlins hitters struck out 17 times against four Washington pitchers. Afternoon shadows didn't help, Redmond told MLB.com's Joe Frisaro.

Thursday marked the fifth time Strasburg punched out at least 12 batters in a game but only the second time he's done it against a team not named the Pirates.

White Sox outfielder Avisail Garcia will miss the rest of the season after it was determined he'll need to undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, the team announced on Thursday.

Garcia suffered the injury while attempting a diving grab during a key juncture in the White Sox' game against the Rockies on Wednesday. Garcia narrowly missed snagging a liner off the bat of DJ LeMahieu that would have allowed Chicago to escape the inning with a one-run lead had the right fielder made the catch. Instead, Colorado tied the game on LeMahieu's hit and went on to score six runs two innings later en route to a 10-4 victory.

Jordan Danks was recalled to replace Garcia, who had eight hits -- including a pair of homers -- and three walks in 34 plate appearances prior to getting hurt.

Justin Upton didn't exactly light the world on fire during the first eight games of the season, but the 26-year-old outfielder turned things around in a big way on Thursday.

Upton hit a pair of home runs (his first two of the season) off of Mets starter Jennry Mejia in the Braves' 6-4 loss. Upton went opposite field against Mejia in the bottom of the second to force a 1-1 tie before really victimizing the Mets' young hurler an inning later:

White Sox rookie Jose Abreu matched Upton's exploits on Thursday, homering twice in Chicago's win over the Indians. It's the second two-homer game in the last three contests for Abreu, who is looking every bit like the offensive threat many predicted he'd be upon his defection from Cuba last August.
