Lester was making a serious bid for his first career perfect game to go with the one no-hitter already under his belt. However, Flowers' infield hit spoiled that, and Lester lost the shutout two batters later on another infield single, this time off the bat of Adam Eaton.
White Sox starter Chris Sale had a no-hitter of his own going through 5⅔ innings before surrendering a solo home run to Xander Bogaerts. That ruined the chance of seeing the first nine-inning double no-hitter since Hippo Vaughn and Fred Toney accomplished the feat on May 2, 1917.
The Thursday night contest is the rubber match of a three-game set between the different-colored Sox. Boston lost the first game of the series, and four of five overall, before beating Chicago in 14 innings on Wednesday.
