Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright left after throwing only 79 pitches in the the team's 3-0 win over the Mets after suffering a knee injury but doesn't expect to miss his next start, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Wainwright hyperextended his right knee, per Goold, forcing him to exit after seven innings and spoiling his bid for a second complete-game shutout this season. Wainwright allowed only four baserunners and struck out three before making way for the bullpen, which kept the Mets off the board for the final two innings to preserve the shutout.
The Cardinals’ ace is in good form thus far in 2014, posting a 1.46 ERA with 32 strikeouts and nine walks in his first five starts.
Fernandez strikes out 14
Marlins ace Jose Fernandez tied a career high with 14 strikeouts in his team's 1-0 victory over the Braves. Fernandez threw 77 of 109 pitches for strikes in eight innings of work. He allowed only three hits and did not walk a batter.
Fernandez also recorded 14 punch-outs against the Indians on Aug. 2 of last season. Tuesday marked the sixth time the 21-year-old right-hander has fanned at least 10 batters, and it was his second straight game with at least 10 strikeouts and no walks.
Braves starter Alex Wood was almost as good as Fernandez, striking out 11 batters and allowing only four hits. He didn't walk a batter, either, but a fourth-inning RBI single off the bat of Casey McGehee, which immediately followed Giancarlo Stanton's double, made all the difference.

Arizona routed again
The Diamondbacks were pounded by the Cubs, 9-2, dropping their run differential for the season to minus-60. The D-Backs are now 5-18 on the season and have been outscored by the Cubs, 14-3, in their current series. Though only one of the five runs allowed by starter Brandon McCarthy was earned, Arizona still has the fourth-worst opening-month ERA in at least 100 years, according to AZ Central Sports' Nick Piecoro.
