Giants starting pitcher Matt Cain was scratched from his scheduled outing on Tuesday as a result of a cut on his right index finger, the team announced before the game.
MLB news: Matt Cain scratched from start, Robinson Cano returns to Yankee Stadium
Want injury news? We’ve got it.

Cain has made 30 or more starts in every season of his career, so this isn't exactly a common thing for the 29-year-old right-hander. He made his first career trip to the disabled list last August after taking a line drive off of his throwing arm in a game against the Pirates, but still managed to miss only two starts.
Yusmeiro Petit was tabbed to start in place of Cain. Petit was a fitting choice considering he also took Cain's roster spot at the start of the aformentioned DL stint.
Cain has posted a 4.35 ERA in five starts this season, displaying similar strikeout and walk numbers as he always has but suffering from inflated hit and home run rates.
Petit pitched well in the emergency start, tossing six shutout innings while allowing only three hits and striking out four.
Cano returns to The Bronx
Robinson Cano was relentlessly booed in his return to New York, even drawing irony-soaked "You sold out!" chants during the Mariners' 6-3 victory over the Yankees.
Cano went 1-for-5 with a pair of strikeouts, though he did notch an RBI and scored a run. Yankees starter CC Sabathia was responsible for one of those punch-outs but was saddled with a loss after allowing four runs on nine hits in five innings. His ERA sits at 5.11 through six starts.
Pineda hurt
Suspended Yankees starter Michael Pineda has a Grade 1 strain of the teres major muscle in his upper back, according to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch. Pineda will visit a doctor in New York on Wednesday for further evaluation.
Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw is currently sidelined with a similar injury, although his is only inflammation, which is less serious than a strain. The star left-hander will have missed at least six weeks, assuming he makes his scheduled start on Monday, meaning Pineda could be in for a lengthier absence.
Hamilton hits first homer
Reds rookie outfielder Billy Hamilton entered Tuesday with a .279 slugging percentage in 2014 and zero home runs in 115 career plate appearances. That all changed (well, the last part, at least) in Hamilton's third at-bat against Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija.
Hamilton hit only 13 home runs in five minor league seasons, and it’s quite possible that none of them got out of the park with the relative ease of his first big league one.
Kipnis exits with injury
Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis left in the fourth inning of the team's game against the Angels with a right abdominal strain, according to MLB.com's Jordan Bastian.
Kipnis was replaced by Mike Aviles after hurting himself on a double-play grounder, per Bastian. As of the end of the game, the club had yet to announce Kipnis' status for the series finale on Wednesday. The 27-year-old All-Star entered Tuesday hitting .239/.360/.402, good for a 120 OPS+.
Kipnis on injury: "I felt somebody punched me in the back. I couldn't breath running down to 1B."
