Jose Fernandez on Tommy John surgery: ‘I have about a year to learn how to throw lefty’

The Marlins’ ace broke some bad-but-expected news to his fans on Thursday but added a little humor (we think?) to make light of his tough situation.

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez officially announced his decision to undergo Tommy John surgery on Thursday. The 21-year-old right-hander will miss a year of baseball, but plans to make the best of the time off, according to an Instagram post from Thursday evening:

“To all my fans: you deserve to know that today, along with my family, I made The decision to undergo tommy john surgery. It was not an easy one, but with my condition it is the only option where I can return to the game I love as the same player I am temporarily leaving the game as. I’ll be back as soon as my elbow will let me . And if anything... I have about a year to learn how to throw lefty ;)You haven’t seen the last of me Miami, I promise you that.”

I guess if a pitcher can post a 176 ERA+, earn an All-Star Game selection and finish third in Cy Young voting as a 20-year-old rookie, he can probably learn how to throw with both arms. Who are we to doubt him?
