Miguel Olivo bites teammate Alex Guerrero’s ear in Triple-A fight

Olivo is not quite as high-profile as the last known athlete to attempt to bite off someone’s ear.

Dodgers minor league infielder Alex Guerrero underwent plastic surgery on his ear after part of it was "displaced by a bite" from teammate Miguel Olivo during a game on Tuesday, according to Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times.

Guerrero and Olivo were involved in a small dust-up on the mound during a pitching change in the seventh inning of a Pacific Coast League game in Salt Lake City. The drama apparently carried over into the dugout in the top half of the eighth, when Olivo first landed a punch on Guerrero before gnawing on the ear of the 27-year-old rookie, per CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman.

Olivo and Guerrero were both removed from the game after the fight, which came not long after the majority of the 12,000 fifth- and sixth-grade students who were at the 10:35 a.m. MT game for the 12th annual Salt Lake Bees Prevention Dimension Kids day returned to school.

The initial on-field altercation happened after Olivo attempted to throw out Salt Lake outfielder J.B. Shuck on a stolen base attempt. Olivo was upset that Guerrero did not tag the runner, according to Hernandez. Play was briefly stopped when the dugout portion of the fight took place. After the delay, infielder Miguel Rojas and catcher Griff Erickson were subbed into the game.

Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti confirmed his knowledge of the situation prior to the Dodgers' game against the Mets but did not want to talk about it, only saying that the team is "looking into" the incident, according to Mike Petriello of Dodgers Digest.
