Matt Cain strains hamstring, Carlos Gonzalez day-to-day with finger inflammation

Cain could be headed to the disabled list for the second time this month.

Matt Cain left Wednesday's start against the Rockies after three innings due to a right hamstring strain.

Cain was making just his third start of the month after hitting the disabled list earlier in May with a finger injury he suffered while making a sandwich. Cain grabbed at his hamstring after delivering his final pitch of the third inning. It is unclear if the Giants right-hander will return to the 15-day disabled list or make his next scheduled start. Yusmeiro Petit came in relief for Cain in the fourth.

Cain, who retired nine of his 10 batters faced on Wednesday, is 1-3 with a 3.66 ERA in eight starts, with 39 strikeouts in 46⅔ innings.

Cain wasn’t the only player injured in that game at Coors Field.

Balk off

The wildest game of the day (and possibly the entire season) came in Cleveland as the Indians beat the Tigers on a walk-off balk in the 13th inning. It was the first balk-off in baseball since 2011.

The Tigers took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but the Indians bounced right back and took a 6-4 lead after the second inning. With the Tigers up 9-7 in the ninth, David Murphy hit a two-run homer to force extra innings. Alex Avila hit a solo home run in the 13th to put Detroit up once again, but Michael Brantley tied the game with a single before Al Alburquerque balked home the winning run.

One-hit wonders

The Athletics beat the Rays 3-2 on Wednesday, which doesn't sound noteworthy except that Oakland had just one hit in the game, a home run by Brandon Moss. The A's became just the 18th team since 1914 to score at least three runs with no more than one hit.
