Texas Rangers first baseman Prince Fielder will miss the rest of the regular season following neck surgery, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. This will be the 17th time the Rangers have used the disabled list in 2014, the most in baseball.

The Rangers’ first baseman is suffering from a herniated disk and will need spinal fusion surgery.

The Rangers took a huge chance on Fielder this offseason, acquiring him and cash from the Tigers in exchange for second baseman Ian Kinsler, but they were banking on a return to form after a lackluster season. Instead, Fielder was having the worst season of his career, with his power sapped because of left-arm weakness related to a herniated disk in his neck. This will be the first trip to the disabled list in Fielder’s 10-year career in the majors.
The Rangers will likely slide Mitch Moreland out of the DH slot and back to his original spot at first base, while figuring out an alternative for the DH role. Kendrys Morales is still on the free agent market, so there is another option if the Rangers are so inclined.
Fielder has six years remaining on his contract after this season.
