Chris Sale allows 1 hit in 6 innings in return from DL

The White Sox ace looked like he didn’t miss any time at all.

It did not take long for Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Chris Sale to re-establish dominance upon returning from the disabled list.

In his first start since April 17, the 25-year-old left-hander carried a perfect game into the sixth inning on Thursday before surrendering a two-out single to New York Yankees outfielder Zoilo Almonte. Sale was removed from the game after that inning, but not before he struck out 10 batters and threw 54 strikes in 86 pitches. The White Sox held a 2-0 lead at the time of his departure.

Sale spent more than a month on the DL with a strained flexor tendon in his left forearm, but the Yankees would probably tell you that he didn't miss any time at all. Sale worked in the mid-90s with his fastball and had his usual array of offspeed offerings working well. Among his strikeout victims were Jacoby Ellsbury (three times) and Derek Jeter (twice). Yangervis Solarte and Brian Roberts were the only Yankee hitters not to whiff against Sale.

It was Sale’s second consecutive outing with double-digit strikeouts and his 12th such performance since becoming a starter in 2012.

After Thursday’s start, Sale has 39 strikeouts against only seven walks in 33⅓ innings this season, to go with a 1.89 ERA and 1.83 FIP.
