Mike Trout leaves Angels game in 2nd inning with mid back discomfort

Trout was pulled early in the Angels’ game against the Astros on Tuesday after missing the previous two games with a back injury.

Angels outfielder Mike Trout left in the second inning of the team's game against the Astros with mid back discomfort, per the Angels' official Twitter account.

Trout missed the last two games with a back injury but received treatment on Monday and said prior to the game on Tuesday that he didn't have any issues during batting practice, according to MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez. Trout started in center field in his return to the lineup and made one plate appearance, which resulted in a strikeout, before being removed in favor of Collin Cowgill.

The 22-year-old star went through a mild slump early in May but hit .432/.467/.703 in his last 10 games before the back issue. Trout is hitting .294/.380/.549 and is second in the American League in WAR at 3.4, trailing only Athletics third baseman Josh Donaldson.

Trout's injury comes just as Josh Hamilton is returning to action. Hamilton had been out since April 8 with a torn ligament in his left thumb in addition to a minor setback while rehabbing in Triple-A. If Trout is forced into a stint on the disabled list, the Angels could recall J.B. Shuck, who hit .293/.331/.366 as a rookie last season. Shuck is hitting .338/.400/.444 for Triple-A Salt Lake.
