The Chicago White Sox selected NC State pitcher Carlos Rodon with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft.

The overwhelming favorite to go No. 1 just a few months ago dropped a couple of spots on Thursday.
It was not long ago that Rodon was widely viewed as the top overall talent heading into the draft, but he was recently overtaken by high school left-hander Brady Aiken, who went No. 1 to the Houston Astros. Rodon was the consensus No. 2 overall selection in the latest mock drafts from Baseball America, ESPN and MLB.com.
The 6’3, 235-pound left-hander didn’t display the type of sharp command this year that he did during his freshman and sophomore campaigns, says MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo. Rodon set a school record with 184 strikeouts in 2013. His strikeout rate dipped by almost two per nine innings as a senior, but he still whiffed more than a batter per inning.
Rodon sits at 91-94 with a fastball that occasionally touches 97, according to Mayo. He was previously drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 16th round in 2011.
