MLB All-Star Game 2014 results: Derek Jeter, Mike Trout collect 2 hits apiece in American League’s 5-3 win

MLB’s biggest star for the past 15 years teamed up with the league’s current best player to lift the AL to victory and home-field advantage in the World Series.

Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter's final All-Star Game went just about how everyone should have envisioned.

The 40-year-old star had two hits, including a double, and scored a run on a triple from Angels outfielder Mike Trout in the American League's 5-3 victory in the 2014 MLB All-Star Game at Target Field on Tuesday. Trout picked up the MVP award for his performance.

Trout's other hit was a double, which plated the go-ahead run in the AL's decisive two-run fifth. That came after the National League scored three unanswered runs in the second and fourth innings to force a tie. Two of those runs came on a pair of doubles by Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy who, along with teammate Aramis Ramirez, led the NL stars with two hits.

Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer off of NL starter Adam Wainwright after the extra-base hits from Jeter and Trout in the first. Wainwright, who later admitted to grooving the pitch that Jeter hit for a double (and, even later than that, apologized for those comments), was taken off the hook by his offense before fellow Cardinals hurler Pat Neshek was saddled with the loss as a result of Trout's double and Jose Altuve's sacrifice fly.

Tigers ace Max Scherzer was credited with the victory. He tossed a scoreless top of the fifth inning, allowing one hit -- a two-out double to Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki -- and striking out two. Scherzer is the first Tigers pitcher to win an All-Star Game since Jim Bunning in 1957.
