The big name throughout the past month of trade deadline rumors was Jon Lester, from whom the Red Sox presumably wanted as much value before he becomes a free agent after the 2014 season. Everybody could see it coming, and yet when the actual trade dropped this morning, nobody expected a legitimate blockbuster. But we got one!
Jon Lester trade for Yoenis Cespedes makes everyone ecstatic
Everybody could see it coming but the blockbuster trade of the summer still took us off-guard.

Let’s take a look at exactly how this happened.
The news breaks...
Source: Jon Lester has been traded.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) July 31, 2014 But where? WHERE JEFF?
Lester going to a team on the West Coast.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) July 31, 2014 Oh, a game. I love games! Does the team have an ‘A’ in its name?

Trying to confirm, but hearing Lester and Gomes might be moving for Cespedes
— Alex Speier (@alexspeier) July 31, 2014 This is about the time everyone in baseball lost their collective shit, but I actually feel bad for our friends at @CespedesBBQ:

What does trade mean for Boston?
Uh, Jackie Bradley and Yoenis Cespedes will have their arms in the same outfield.
— Marc Normandin (@Marc_Normandin) July 31, 2014 I feel like the Red Sox should be trying to extend Cespedes pretty much now, before he gets a chancee to hit in Fenway...
— OverTheMonster (@OverTheMonster) July 31, 2014
A year and a half of Cespedes is not bad when you think you have a chance in 2015. Where else is a power bat coming from?

What does the trade mean for the A’s?
Billy Beane knows the world is about to end in mid-November. That's the only explanation I can think of.
— David Matthews (@davidmatthews__) July 31, 2014 the a's out here making "OUR OWNER IS 95 AND HAS PNEUMONIA"-level moves
— Bill Hanstock (@sundownmotel) July 31, 2014 #Athletics loved chemistry Gomes brought to their 2012 division-winning team, which makes him a potentially underrated part of Lester deal.
— Geoff Baker (@GeoffBakerTIMES) July 31, 2014 Gomes: "Chemistry is icing on the cake. It's not the cake."
— Tim Britton (@TimBritton) July 31, 2014 With As all in for Oct, couldn't have done better than Lester: 2.11 ERA in 13 playoff games. He's 3-0 with a 0.43 ERA in World Series.
— David Lennon (@DPLennon) July 31, 2014 Billy Beane is doing everything possible to make sure this year's postseason IS NOT a crapshoot.
— The Captain's Blog (@williamnyy23) July 31, 2014 And everybody else?
baseball has a real parity problem when a greedy team like the A's can just drop in and clear out the trade market
— Jeff Sullivan (@based_ball) July 31, 2014 The adage is true... GMs want to work deals that work for both sides. I'll be damned if I can say who got the better end of this trade.
— Maury Brown (@BizballMaury) July 31, 2014 I want to live in a world where blockbuster deals like Lester-for-Cespedes happen at the Trade Deadline. Wait, I do live in that world?
— Jordan Bastian (@MLBastian) July 31, 2014 Btw, Saturday is "La Potencia" Yoenis Cespedes T-Shirt giveaway day at the #Athletics game. #Awkward
