MLB trade rumors: Andrew Miller deal ‘close’ between Tigers, Red Sox
GM Dave Dombrowski could be close to making a major addition to the Tigers’ bullpen before the deadline.
The Detroit Tigers are "getting close" to a deal for Boston Red Sox lefty Andrew Miller, reports Jon Morosi of Fox Sports. The reliever has been one of the most popular names on the market all week, and would give a huge boost to the back of the Tigers' bullpen.
Miller has been flat-out dominant for Boston this season, with a 2.34 ERA and peripherals indicating even stronger performance. Over 42⅓ innings, he’s struck out 69 and walked 13, allowed just two home runs, and had no issues with lefties or righties.
That makes him a strong fit in Detroit, where Phil Coke and Ian Krol haven't cut it as the top lefties out of Brad Ausmus' bullpen. Adding someone like Miller likely won't be cheap, but would give the team a significant upgrade at one of its top positions of need.
The Tigers originally drafted Miller with the No. 6 overall pick in 2006, and he made his debut in Detroit later that year before being traded to the Marlins in the Miguel Cabrera deal. He spent a few years as a struggling starter before finally blossoming after the Red Sox moved him to relief work, making this a potential reunion of sorts.
