With Ichiro Suzuki stretched as the primary right fielder and little depth on the roster, adding another outfielder has been an obvious need for New York all month. Brett Gardner and Jacoby Ellsbury have kept two of the starting spots locked down, but otherwise the Yankees have been badly in need of help.
Alfonso Soriano was supposed to be a key contributor this season, but he was released earlier this season after looking pretty much done, and at 40, Ichiro fits better as a fourth outfielder than a starter. Someone like Willingham or Denorfia would at least give the team a steady option.
The fact that New York is considering players of such different styles also speaks to the fact that the team is being flexible in its search for an outfielder. Whether it’s a power bat like Willingham or a versatile, defense-oriented player like Denorfia, the Yankees seem pretty set on getting someone to help.
