Tyler Skaggs will undergo Tommy John, J.J. Hardy scratched with thumb strain

A roundup of injuries from around the league.

Joy R. Absalon-USA TODAY Sports

The Angels received some disheartening news just in time for the home stretch of their AL West pennant chase. Left hander Tyler Skaggs will miss the remainder of the season due to an elbow injury that will require Tommmy John surgery, according to the Orange County Register's John Fletcher.

The Angels, who own the second-best record in baseball, trail the Oakland Athletics by four games in what is a key division race. The team that comes in second might have the second-best record in the league, but they'll still have to roll the dice in a wild card game.

Now, the Angels will have to attempt to leapfrog the A's without Skaggs, who has a 4.30 ERA over 113 innings this season. His FIP (3.55) and xFIP (3.67) suggest he's been better than that, and his absence will certainly be a hindrance on the Angels' attempt to avoid the wild card. Hector Santiago -- who was acquired with Skaggs this winter in the Mark Trumbo trade -- and Matt Shoemaker will fill in at the back end of Los Angeles' rotation.

J.J. Hardy's thumb injury is "not good"

Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy has suffered a strained left thumb and will miss considerable time, according to MLB.com's Britanny Ghiroli. That may not sound extremely detailed, but at this point, there is no timetable for his return. Hardy was scratched from Sunday's game against the Cardinals, according to MASN's Roch Kubatko, who says the injury "must've occurred during batting practice." Manager Buck Showalter will have more information after the game.

White Sox place Adam Eaton on 15-day disabled list

White Sox outfielder Adam Eaton has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right oblique strain, the Chicago Sun-Times Daryl Van Schouwen reports.

Eaton sounded extremely frustrated in Van Schouwen’s report.

“I’m not doing anybody any good, and I’ve said that many times before. I want to be out with these guys. I want to try and produce as well as I can and stay healthy doing that. Running into the wall is not healthy.”

Jordan Danks was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte to replace him on the active roster. This will be Eaton's second stint on the disabled list in 2014.
