Orioles confirm Manny Machado out for season after knee surgery

The O’s announced Saturday that the young third baseman will miss the rest of the 2014 season to have surgery to repair a partial tear of the medial patellar femoral ligament in his right knee.

Baltimore Orioles general manager Dan Duquette announced Saturday that third baseman Manny Machado will have surgery to repair a partial tear to the medial patellar femoral ligament in his right knee, per Eduardo Encina of the Baltimore Sun. Machado will miss the rest of the regular season and playoffs.

The surgery hasn’t yet been scheduled, but was decided upon on Friday, when Machado said his knee wasn’t progressing in the two weeks since his injury, wrote Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com.

Machado had surgery for a full tear of the same ligament in his left knee on Oct. 14, 2013, which caused him to miss the first 25 games of the 2014 season while he recovered.

“It’s a thing you have to deal with,” Chris Davis told Roch Kubatko of MASN. “You have injuries, you have guys beat up. That’s just part of it.”

The 22-year-old third baseman hit .278/.324/.431 with 12 home runs in 82 games in 2014, his third major league season. He suffered a right knee sprain during a swing on Aug. 11 and hasn’t played since.

The Orioles are 73-53, the third-best record in baseball. Their eight-game margin over the New York Yankees is the largest divisional lead in baseball. Baltimore is 5-3 since Machado's injury, and 26-18 in games he didn't start this season.

Davis has started seven of the last nine games at third base for the Orioles in Machado's absence, including on Saturday afternoon, the first time for Davis at the hot corner since 2011.
