Free agent infielder Asdrubal Cabrera has agreed to terms with the New York Mets, per multiple reports, on a two-year contract plus a club option for 2018 per Chris Cotillo of SB Nation. The contract is worth $18.5 million, per Ken Davidoff of New York Newsday.

Cabrera hit .265/.315/.430 with 15 home runs and 28 doubles in 143 games with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2015. While primarily a shortstop throughout his nine-year career, Cabrera has also played second base at times, most recently after getting acquired by the Washington Nationals at the trade deadline in 2014.
The 30-year-old switch hitter made $7.5 million in 2015 with Tampa Bay.

The Mets were busy on Wednesday, one day after missing out on free agent Ben Zobrist, who they targeted for second base. Zobrist signed with the Chicago Cubs, and the Mets responded by trading for second baseman Neil Walker from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday, and now signing Cabrera.
Cabrera will be used primarily at shortstop, and also mix in time at second base and third base, per Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. The club also has Ruben Tejada and Wilmer Flores in the middle infield, with David Wright and Lucas Duda starting at the corners.
