Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Brandon McCarthy has a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and will miss the rest of the season, according to Eric Stephen of True Blue LA.
Brandon McCarthy out for the season as pitcher injuries continue to pile up
Dodgers righty Brandon McCarthy is likely the latest hurler headed for Tommy John surgery, while a few other pitchers landed on the disabled list Monday.

McCarthy left his latest start Saturday against the San Diego Padres with elbow tightness, and subsequent tests revealed a tear in his UCL.
Per Stephen, McCarthy is leaning toward undergoing Tommy John surgery to repair the injury but hasn’t yet made an official decision. If he does go under the knife, the righty is hoping to return before next season’s All-Star Break.
The Dodgers signed McCarthy to a four-year, $48 million contract this past offseason in a deal that raised some eyebrows given the 31-year-old's extensive injury history. Still, McCarthy had averaged over 150 innings per season the last four years and was coming off a strong second half with the New York Yankees in 2014.
McCarthy's injury is a further blow to the Dodgers' already thin pitching depth. Hyun-jin Ryu has yet to make a start after beginning the season on the DL, while Brandon Beachy and closer Kenley Jansen also still sidelined with injury.
Reds place Bailey on 15-day DL
The Cincinnati Reds’ Homer Bailey is having injury issues with his throwing elbow after Cincinnati placed the right-hander on the 15-day DL with an elbow ligament strain.
This is troubling news for Bailey, who underwent surgery last September to fix a torn flexor mass tendon near his elbow. The surgery set back Bailey’s progress this spring before he began the season on the DL.
The 28-year-old made his first start on April 18, and struggled through two outings this campaign, posting a 5.56 ERA in 11⅓ innings pitched.
Scherzer to miss his next scheduled start
The Washington Nationals announced that Max Scherzer will miss his next scheduled start Tuesday after jamming his right thumb during an at-bat in his last outing. Washington hopes Scherzer will be able to start later this week and not have to miss a full turn in the club's rotation.
After signing a seven-year, $210 million contract this offseason, Scherzer has been his usual dominant self on the mound through four starts. The 30-year-old has compiled a 1.26 ERA with 29 strikeouts and just four walks in 28⅔ innings.
Rockies closer Ottavino headed to 15-day DL
The Colorado Rockies placed closer Adam Ottavino on the 15-day DL after an MRI revealed inflammation in his right triceps, according to Nick Groke of the Denver Post.
Ottavino just earned the closer's role two weeks ago and had yet to allow a run in 10⅓ innings this season. Fellow Colorado reliever LaTroy Hawkins is already on the DL with a biceps injury.
With both Ottavino and Hawkins injured, Rockies manager Walt Weiss said relievers John Axford and Rafael Betancourt will get the team's opportunities in save situations.
