New York Mets third baseman David Wright has been diagnosed with spinal stenosis, per Anthony DiComo. This condition -- the same one which forced Lenny Dykstra to retire at the age of 35 -- is a narrowing of the spinal column that, although treatable, does take time to recover from.

Wright originally landed on the disabled list in April. The culprit at the time was his right hamstring, but he began to suffer from back pain while rehabbing the injury Friday. New York had hoped to get him on a minor league assignment and back in the lineup soon, but that plan has obviously changed.
According to Major League Baseball, Wright is stopping all baseball activities for the next week to receive treatment. The Mets remain optimistic that their star player will heal, but no timetable has been set and the understanding is that it will probably take a while.
Wright has spent his entire 12-year career with the Mets, batting .298/.377/.494 with 231 home runs and 943 RBI. He was voted to the All-Star team seven times.
