MLB Network on Thursday launched a live, authenticated stream of its programming to computers and mobile devices, becoming the first league-owned television network to be fully available online.
MLB Network launches online streaming of programming, games
Included in the streaming are MLB games shown on the network, which allows an alternative viewing option previously not available except for those with a subscription to MLB.tv.
The games will still be subject to local blackout rules, but that is currently the case for games on MLB Network on television, anyway.
“Since 2009, MLB Network has provided Major League Baseball fans with the most comprehensive coverage of the game on television through its award-winning programming,” said MLB Network president Rob McGlarry in a press release. “In partnership with MLB Advanced Media, which has been an industry leader in live streaming for over a decade, these new platforms will provide fans with MLB Network wherever they are.”
Beginning Thursday, users will be able to watch the high definition stream of MLB Network programming online either via the MLB AtBat app or via MLBNetwork.com, once they log in with their cable subscription.
The network reached deals with several top providers in the United States, including AT&T U-Verse, Bright House Networks, Cablevision/Optimum, Cox Communications, DirecTV, Dish, Time Warner Cable, and Verizon FiOS. Of the top 10 U.S. television providers, only Comcast and Charter don’t currently provide the service.
The first games to be shown on MLB Network with online streaming available are Thursday night, with regional coverage of either the San Francisco Giants at the New York Mets, or the Boston Red Sox at Baltimore Orioles.
