The Boston Red Sox have named Dave Dombrowski their new president of baseball operations, the team announced on Tuesday, in a front office shakeup that also included former Red Sox GM Ben Cherington announcing his resignation.

The former Tigers GM is taking over in Boston.

Dombrowski was one of the most coveted front-office free agents in recent memory, recently stepping down as the GM for the Detroit Tigers. This will be the fourth front office that Dombrowski has helped lead, and his past credits include building the strike-saddened 1994 Expos, the 1997 Marlins championship team, and the pennant-winning Tigers. He was also credited with laying the foundation for the 2003 Marlins championship team through the owner-mandated fire sale.
Cherington started as a scout in the Red Sox organization, rising all the way to co-GM with Jed Hoyer during Theo Epstein’s leave of absence. After Epstein left the organization, Cherington became the GM in 2011, helping build the eventual 2013 World Series championship team. An ill-advised $200 million spending spree in the offseason on underperforming players, Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez, likely hastened his departure.
The Red Sox also added former Angels GM Jerry Dipoto in an advisory role last week.
