NCAA Baseball Tournament 2016 scores and bracket: 3 super regional spots still up for grabs

Will the regional round ever end?

Steven Branscombe-USA TODAY Sports

Forty-eight hours into the NCAA Baseball Tournament and we’re still not done with the first round. Thanks to weather delays and a scrappy Rice team, three regional championship games will drag into Tuesday.

In Raleigh, a late rain shower postponed NC State vs. Coastal Carolina, which will pick back up at 2 p.m. ET on Tuesday with Coastal trailing by one run with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Things never even got off the ground in Columbia, where South Carolina is still waiting to finish off a losers bracket rally against UNC-Wilmington in Game 7.

Then there’s Rice. Roughly 24 hours after losing to LSU in a weather-delayed winner’s bracket game, the Owls forced a Game 7 with a 10-6 win over the host team on Monday night, their second elimination game win of the day. Earlier that afternoon they obliterated Southeast Louisiana 15-0 to climb into the regional finals.

Hell, if it weren’t for some weird-ass ground rules at Alex Box Stadium, Rice might have already clinched a super regional trip. LSU won 4-2 in the winners bracket game on Sunday, with all four runs coming on this unconventional grand slam in the first inning:

Ya see, LSU’s ground rules state that any ball hit under that bench is out of play ... unless a fielder attempts to extract the ball from underneath it. That, of course, seems unfair given that the Rice outfielder clearly threw his hands up looking for a ground-rule double call but, after getting no reaction from the ump, had no other option but to burrow for the ball.

Regardless, the Owls get their chance to take the series on Tuesday.

NC State’s coach has a sick spin move

The Wolfpack are just two outs away fighting their way out of the losers bracket to win the Raleigh Regional. They won an early afternoon elimination game against Coastal Carolina, then turned around and took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 7. Down came the rains, washing the game into Tuesday.

Skipper Elliot Avent won’t be around to watch the conclusion.

NC State’s head coach was tossed in the third inning of the early game after he lost his damn mind arguing a ball four call with the home plate ump.

THAT DWIGHT FREENEY SPIN MOVE THO

Avent’s blowup came with a complimentary two-game suspension, meaning he’s not only missing the rest of Tuesday’s game, but will have to sit out the first bout of a potential super with the Baton Rouge winner.

West Coast party don’t stop

Every team west of Texas was excruciatingly mediocre this season, but the Left Coast regained a bit of respect by winning a pair of regionals on Monday. Arizona shocked Louisiana-Lafayette by coming out of the losers bracket to take back-to-back games thanks to some incredible pitching from reliever Chris Ginkel -- dude closed the ninth for a 6-3 win in the first game, then turned around and threw 5 2/3 innings in the rubber match.

Two states north, UC Santa Barbara hammered Xavier by nine runs to go 3-0 in the rain-delayed Nashville Regional. That books the Gauchos a ticket to No. 2 national seed Louisville while Arizona treks off for Starkville to take on No. 5 national seed Mississippi State.
