Milwaukee Brewers minor league infielder Julio Mendez suffered what the team is calling a “cardiac event” after getting hit by a pitch in the chest in a rookie league game in Arizona on Saturday night.

Mendez, playing third base on Saturday for the AZL Brewers in Tempe, Ariz., was hit by a pitch from Los Angeles Angels minor leaguer Austin Krzeminski with one out in the ninth inning, and the game was discontinued. Per Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, “reports indicate he was administered CPR by medical staff on site before being transported to a hospital.”

Mendez, signed by the Brewers out of Venezuela in 2014, remained in critical, but stable condition on Sunday at a local hospital, per the team.

“All of our thoughts and prayers are with Julio and his family,” said Brewers general manager David Stearns in a statement released by the team. “We will provide updates as soon as we know more.”
