Mets trade Jay Bruce to the Indians for a pitching prospect

Bruce has been on the trade block for weeks now, so this doesn’t come as much of a surprise.

The Mets are sending outfielder Jay Bruce to Cleveland, per reports. Fox’s Ken Rosenthal was the first to report the trade.

Bruce has been on the trade block for weeks now, but the Mets couldn’t find a partner before the deadline for multiple outfielders on their roster, including this one.

New York made it clear it wasn’t going to stop selling after the non-waiver trade deadline, so this move doesn’t come as much of a surprise.

In return, the Indians are sending prospect Ryder Ryan back to New York. They will also be absorbing all of of Bruce’s $5 million salary that remains this season.

A Midwest League All-Star, Ryan has a 4.79 ERA in 33 games this season with the Lake County Captains, the Indians Single-A affiliate.

Cleveland needed to make a move on the outfielder due to Michael Brantley going to the disabled list after spraining his ankle against the Rockies on Tuesday night. Right fielder Lonnie Chisenhall has also been out of commission since early July.

Bruce is putting up a line of .258/.324/.524 this season, which isn’t anything to write home about, but he has an OPS+ of 118 which would rank fifth on Cleveland’s current roster. He should be enough to get Cleveland through these tough injury times.
