We have dozens of women covering pro and college sports for our team brands here at SB Nation. Meet one of those talented writers, Kate Preusser, who writes for our Seattle Mariners blog, Lookout Landing.
Meet Kate Preusser from Lookout Landing
Kate is the first female managing editor of our Mariners site here at SB Nation.

Why are you so passionate about baseball and the Mariners?
I dislike the “how did you fall in love with baseball?” question because it so often feels like a question that’s asked of women but not of men. For me, there’s no “how did you get into baseball” because I don’t remember getting into it; it always just was. I used to sit in front of the TV and mimic what was happening in the game with my stuffed animals and a set of cardboard bases.
What has been your favorite experience covering the Mariners for Lookout Landing?
My favorite experience covering our team for SB Nation has definitely been the community outreach part we get to do. From softball games to meetups to charity partnerships with some of our players, it’s so much more than just covering the team; it’s creating a community space both online and in person and getting to connect with people and do stuff that’s bigger than just us.
What are some of the unique challenges you’ve faced?
The worst experience I’ve had is probably when I was turned away at a clubhouse, a place I’ve been dozens of times, when I was covering the Triple-A All-Star game...right after my male colleague was waved through.
How did you start writing for Lookout Landing?
I started with FanPosts before I was invited to be part of the staff. I really dove in and challenged myself to write about a wide variety of topics, and I also volunteered to cover stuff other people didn’t want to do, like weekend recaps. And now I’m the boss of the applesauce!
What women in the industry do you look up to?
I am grateful to Mina Kimes, who followed me on Twitter when I had 24 followers and sort of gave me an entree to Sports Twitter. Meg Rowley also helped me tremendously. I’m lucky to cover the Mariners, who have a strong female presence in the organization. ROOT sports anchor Angie Mentink is my hero and unbelievably kind.
