Todd Frazier won’t have to change many of his New York City habits for the upcoming season. Last season’s Yankees and White Sox third baseman is moving boroughs to join the Mets for the 2018 season.

According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, Frazier is signing with the Mets for two years and $17 million, ending speculation on where he would end up. That speculation has included multiple teams throughout this offseason. The deal gives the Mets a steady third baseman beyond Asdrubal Cabrera, whose option they picked up last the fall, and David Wright, who might never play baseball again after multiple surgeries and injuries he just hasn’t been able to overcome.
In 147 games between the White Sox and Yankees in 2017, Frazier hit .213/.344/.428 with a .772 OPS. He went 7-for-24 in the ALCS against the future World Series-winning Astros with a home run and four RBI, and had a regular season fielding percentage of .960 with 13 errors, which is above league average at least.
The Mets are also rumored to be going after Alex Cobb and Lance Lynn if their prices come down, and have repeatedly claimed to have tried for top targets after other teams already inked them. They’ll have to let Cabrera know he’s back to shortstop or the backup at third, something that caused him to request a trade last season. Which is all very Mets.
At least they, unlike many other teams, made a deal happen. At only a week short of 32 years old, Frazier isn’t a double digit-per year man anymore but fills a need for the Mets and is an AAV in line with what Frazier would have gotten even in an offseason more normal than this one.
If the market continues to tank, maybe the Mets will get to sign even more free agents. Otherwise this might be the high water mark of their offseason.
