Jayson Werth responded to Max Scherzer’s stolen base joke with some ribbing of his own

Just two old friends lightly mocking each other.

Max Scherzer successfully stole his first base ever this week, but he didn’t have to try too hard to make it to the base safely since the Braves didn’t attempt to pick him off. It’s still very impressive though, especially coming in a game where he also struck out more than 10 batters and generally just owner.

After the game, Scherzer had some fun at the expense of his old teammate and good friend Jayson Werth, saying “If J Dub can steal a base so can I.”

Of course, Werth is one of the best base stealers ever — he’s in the Top 5 in stolen base percentage. Scherzer knows that, but it was mound to rile his buddy up in some way and it was funny. Last season Scherzer called Werth “Grandpa” so this isn’t the first time they’ve joshed around.

On Friday, Werth got him back though, telling The Athletic,

“I don’t know why he’s so excited about a defensive indifference. The official scorer must have been a fan, throwing him a charity SB. [Freddie] Freeman wasn’t even holding him on. I think he’s still bitter about the pickup basketball game from this winter when I used him to mop the floor.”

Bringing pickup basketball games into things? Ruthless Werth is out here revealing privileged pickup information, which hopefully the Nationals front office already knows about. Scherzer better work on his base stealing skills even more now that he knows Werth takes his spot on the percentage leaderboard so seriously.

Maybe someday he could even pass Werth as revenge for those past basketball slights.
