It’s still April and Joey Votto is already trolling opposing fans

A tradition unlike any other.

Joey Votto, hero and/or jerk, is one of the premiere trollers in the entire league. If there’s an opportunity for him to mess with opposing fans, he’ll do it. Whether it’s a way for him to entertain himself for nine innings of baseball or if it’s just that he can’t get this particular brand of joy from any other hobby in his life, the one thing that is definitely true is that it’s hilarious every time.

Votto started his trolling way ahead of schedule this year, and maybe that’s because the Reds’ start hasn’t been too promising, with a Monday night display of “gotcha” in Philadelphia. Phillies’ fans are where this “tradition” started a few years ago so it only makes sense that he’d keep it going during Cincinnati’s first trip to Philly.

With the Reds down 2-1 in the first inning, Maikel Franco blooped a foul ball down the first base line. As Votto jogged over to pick it up he made it seem like he was set to toss it into the crowd as many players do in that situation.

Instead he ran away with it like a kid who stole his little brother’s toy and is trying to get out of hitting range before his sibling notices.

The Phillies dugout looked visibly amused about the whole thing, which will hopefully keep fans from taking any of it too seriously or getting upset about it. It’s a fun occurrence at this point, and Votto definitely knows it as proven by his inability to hide a satisfied smile after he resumed his place at first base.
