There is a world where Ichiro could be Mariners manager this weekend

Please let this happen. Please, please, please.

Everyone gather round, there’s some important news we have to share with you. Yes that’s it, a little closer.

OK, here it is: There is a chance, albeit a slim one, that Ichiro could end up as acting Mariners manager this weekend.

I KNOW, RIGHT?

Usual manager Scott Servais is heading down to Ole Miss to watch his daughter get her master’s degree, so he won’t be managing the team during both their Friday and Saturday games against the Tigers. Which means Manny Acta will be handling those duties.

Taking Acta’s place as bench coach is Ichiro. Which means if Acta gets ejected for any reason (purposeful or not, HINT, HINT, MANNY) then Ichiro gets to manage the team.

I don’t say this lightly: if you do not want this scenario to play out and Ichiro to get to manage, you hate baseball. Who doesn’t want this to happen? Which of you out there is thinking about this and going “eh, doesn’t seem that exciting”? There aren’t enough good things in this world and everyone could use this dream situation panning out as outlined here.

Acta said of Ichiro’s temporary new role,

“To have Ichiro as my bench coach is a luxury. It’s another little history I can tell my grandkids down the road.”

“During the game, he’ll be watching and managing his own game, just like I do. If anything pops up, I’ll ask him. And probably at the end of the day, I’ll go with my idea.”

Acta needs to take one for the team here and just go off after only one out in either of these two games in order to get ejected as fast as possible.

Do it for us, Manny. You want to tell your grandkids about Ichiro being your bench coach? Well we want to pass the story of when you got ejected for trying to climb the netting behind home plate and Ichiro had to step into manage down to our grandkids.

You still have a few hours to brainstorm the fastest and most sure way to get your butt kicked out of that dugout this weekend.

Ichiro recently “retired” and moved to a position in Seattle’s front office, so him getting to manage a major league game would be the nicest surprise possible so soon. Cross your fingers.
