Gretchen Piscotty, A’s pitcher Stephen Piscotty’s mother, succumbed to her battle with ALS on Sunday evening as the team confirmed this afternoon. She was diagnosed with the disease last year and the Cardinals traded Piscotty to Oakland over the offseason so he could be close to his mother and help in her care.
Yu Darvish donated $10,000 to ALS research after the passing of Stephen Piscotty’s mother

Piscotty and the A’s set up a fundraiser for the ALS Therapy Development Institute in her honor, and as of this writing it has already raised more than $25,000 of it’s $100,000 goal.
Dozens of donors are contributing to the fund, contributing anonymously or with names attached in a variety of amounts from $25 to a few hundred. But the most notable donation came from Cubs pitcher Yu Darvish in the amount of $10,000.
Darvish confirmed the donation on Twitter when a Cards fan tweeted about his donation and he replied “we are all family.”
The A’s committed to matching up to $50,000 in donations, a great gesture from the team despite Piscotty only being a member of the organization for a few months. ALS is incurable but every dollar towards research is a dollar towards no one losing another loved one to the disease.
