It’s Day 4 of the 2018 NCAA baseball tournament, which means that by close of business Monday night, we’ll know our full field of 16 super regional clubs to battle it out for a shot at the College World Series in Omaha.

Opening weekend has held its fair share of zany moments, but the fourth and final day of the regional round has been utterly astounding. Mississippi State, which lost 20-10 to Oklahoma to open things in the Tallahassee regional (yes, you read that right: 20-10), clawed their way out of the losers’ bracket and managed to upend Oklahoma in an 8-1 win, which pits them against Vanderbilt in a super regional tilt.

Even more surprisingly, Duke and South Carolina wrangled off regional wins in the Athens and Greenville regional tilts, respectively, with Duke hammering Georgia in two straight thrashings. The Blue Devils’ bats are hot, and they’ll hitch up with Texas Tech’s equally powerful hitting for one of the more intriguing super regional match-ups of the tournament.

Florida marched into Monday with no losses on their sheet and promptly dropped a 7-4 shocker to upstart Florida Atlantic. The Owls can hit, and they can play some defense, and in the final elimination game of the Gainesville regional, the Gators got into trouble early.

FAU has some punch, and enough so to upend a really talented Florida club that’s been on a nap throughout Monday afternoon. Somewhat surprising, considering Florida never fell out out of the top three in this year’s national baseball rankings. Such is the game.

Ole Miss entered the day with no losses in the Oxford regional, and immediately dropped a 15-5 stunner to Tennessee Tech, who bashed their way out of the the losers’ bracket to undo the regional host. That prompted a final and deciding Game 7, and TTU wasn’t scared of Ole Miss’ dominant pitching staff.

Tech led the Rebels, 3-2, heading into the top of the ninth. If Ole Miss lost, they’d be the eighth regional host to drop their opening tournament tilt. It’d also be the second time in three years that Ole Miss has lost as a regional host.

UPDATE: Tennessee Tech hung on to a 3-2 lead and won, taking the Oxford regional with back-to-back wins on Monday. The Golden Eagles will face a formidable Texas club in the Austin super regional.
