Max Scherzer had an immaculate inning against the Rays Tuesday night, the second of his career. As with the usual immaculate inning, it’s wild to wrap your head around and awesome to watch.

But that’s almost not the most impressive part of his night. Scherzer once again had a magnificent outing, holding the Rays to just five hits and two runs in eight innings of work. In that span he struck out 13 Tampa Bay players.
It also only took him 99 pitches to get through those eight innings, with a whopping 81 pitches thrown being strikes. He had first-pitch strikes against 25 of the 28 batters he faced, and had 17 called strikes.
Max Scherzer dominating sometimes feels expected. But there’s a reason I’m still using “dominated” here, because, my God. Him being this way most of the time and no one being surprised by it anymore is more impressive than an immaculate inning.
Although that was cool as well.
