The Yankees might not be the favorite to land Orioles shortstop Manny Machado, but they aren’t going to let a little thing like Baltimore owner Peter Angelos despising them from trying to complete a trade. According to Jon Heyman, the Yankees made a “strong offer” for Machado, and are “clearly a player” in the race to acquire the slugger.
The Yankees reportedly sent a ‘strong’ trade offer for Manny Machado
Thursday’s Say Hey, Baseball looks at the biggest trade rumor target going in July.

That would make the Yankees the seventh team that has reportedly made an offer: The Brewers, Dodgers, D-Backs, Phillies, Braves, Indians, and Cubs have also submitted offers for the pending free agent.
Angelos, who has not-so-quietly let it be known over the years he wouldn’t trade Machado to his hated division rivals if he could help it, will apparently relent on that if he can get back pitching prospect Justus Sheffield from New York. While that means there is a chance for the Yankees here, Jon Morosi goes on to say there’s “skepticism” that New York would move him for a rental, even one of Machado’s ability. According to Roch Kubatko on the O’s beat, Sheffield wasn’t in the offer New York sent to Baltimore, either.
There are a few things here to remember, before you breathe a sigh of relief or defeat, depending on your personal Machado-Yankees context. For one, this is the Orioles we’re talking about, and they aren’t exactly known for making decisions that put them in the best position to succeed. Throw in that Brian Cashman is the general manager on the other end of the line, and, well, Orioles fans better hope one of the other half-dozen offers Dan Duquette and Angelos are mulling over is real good, because Cashman always finds a way to get his guy for less than he should pay.
About all we know at this point, and we know it only so far as we can infer it, is Machado will likely be moved before the July 31 trade deadline. There are already so many offers in at this point, and such a constant flow of rumors, that it feels like this will be wrapped up sooner than later. Then again, this is the O’s were talking about, and trading Machado shouldn’t be rushed, so inference might not mean as much as it should on July 12, either.
