The trade deadline is Tuesday, which is either very exciting news or the kind of that is going to make you panic when you realize how boring the lead-in to the deadline has been. We’re sorry, you know, we wanted to write more fun and educational stuff for you this month, too, but nooooo, MLB had to go and make it so there were barely any trades or rumors for us to work with.
The MLB trade deadline is Tuesday and there are still good players to be traded
Monday’s Say Hey, Baseball looks at the impending trade deadline and a few players who could still be moved.

Maybe they’ll make up for it in these final hours, though. Maybe we’ll get some Chris Archer rumors and we can tell you about how getting out of the soul-crushing AL East and off a Rays team that seems more interested in getting on the path to selling than winning could be good for him. Or maybe Brian Dozier will be attached to a few more rumors, and then we can look at his 2018 and wonder why it’s so much different from his last few seasons, and how he might help his new team.
Or maybe J.T. Realmuto will finally be freed from the clutches of the Marlins, onto a team trying to do something besides pay back the debt incurred by anyone buying an MLB team these days. It’ll reportedly take more than Victor Robles for that to happen, though.
These aren’t the only players left, but in a deadline with few exciting names available, and the likes of Manny Machado and Cole Hamels already dealt, they’re the ones who stick out. Unless you’re excited about Zack Wheeler for some reason.
So, let’s take the next 30 hours to sit back and see what rumors unfold, and which rumors become realized with actual trades. We’ll be here covering it for you.
- Maybe you won’t be excited about some of the secondary pieces in trades today, but as these six players to be named later remind, you don’t have to be a centerpiece to later become an all-star.
- Did you miss all the incredibly stupid “drama” surrounding the Dodgers’ batting practice attire and Joe Simpson’s dumb-as-hell response to it? Eric Stephen can catch you up on this waste of time.
- Lourdes Gurriel had multiple hits in 11 consecutive games, but he’s now hurt his leg.
- Sean Newcomb just missed a no-hitter by a single strike. After this game, he had to apologize for racist and homophobic tweets unearthed during his time on the mound.
- The apology was of the toothless and meaningless “I didn’t mean to offend anybody with the offensive things that I said” variety, which I am rolling my eyes about even as I type this.
- Newcomb wasn’t the only player to spend his Sunday apologizing, as Trea Turner also had to answer for old tweets.
- Britni de la Cretaz attempted to unpack the decision of some teams to host events with Barstool.
- Camden Chat wants the Orioles to capitalize on their ability to develop relievers before the trade deadline passes.
- Short Relief is one of the best parts of Baseball Prospectus, so you should be on the lookout for new iterations of it if you aren’t already.
