Manny Machado’s free agency is finally over. The superstar infielder has agreed to a deal with the San Diego Padres, reportedly worth $300 million over 10 years. The deal was first reported by Jeff Passan of ESPN.

The 26-year-old Machado was traded from the Baltimore Orioles to the Los Angeles Dodgers last season. He combined to hit .297/.367/.538 with 37 home runs and 107 RBI. He can play either shortstop or third base. This is the biggest free agent contract in American sports history in terms of total dollars, per ESPN.
Machado joins a Padres team that finished with the second-worst record in the National League last season. San Diego hasn’t made the playoffs since 2006. Machado joins an impressive young infield that is already home to top prospect Fernando Tatis Jr., highly-touted second baseman Luis Urias, and last offseason’s big free agent addition, first baseman Eric Hosmer.
Padres ownership has said the deal is not complete yet.
As noted by Ken Rosenthal, Machado and the Padres have agreed to financial terms, but haven’t finalized language. Machado will still have to pass a physical.
The prolonged free agency of Machado and fellow slugger Bryce Harper has been baseball’s biggest offseason storyline, with allegations of collusion among owners reputedly depressing the market. Harper remains a free agent as teams have already reported to spring training.
