Philadelphia sports had its worst night in over 40 years

Oh, what a night.

Something very magical happened on Thursday night if you’re a hater of all things Philly. In an incredible fusion of ineptitude, every single one of the city’s sports teams playing managed to fail in spectacular fashion.

We’ll kick things off with the most important game: The Phillies. Emotions were high, hope was overflowing — could this be a chance for Philadelphia to topple the Dodgers’ evil empire, head to the NLCS, and potentially make it to the World Series?

Nope.

The Phillies didn’t just lose, they lost in the bottom of the 11th. So much pain — but at least the Eagles were playing the Giants. A chance for a feel-good win to cement Philly as the best team in the NFC with a bullet.

Nope.

The Eagles got stomped by one of the worst teams in the NFL (until last night) as Jaxson Dart and Cam Skattebo went absolute HAM on the defense, combining for five touchdowns and going full frat boy on them in the process. It’s not like the Eagles are bad, but this stung a little more after the loss to the Dodgers.

At least the Flyers were still playing. Now, they may not be the best team in Philadelphia, but there’s some hope they can surprise this year with their young roster.

Nope.

There’s no shame losing to the Florida Panthers, the best team in hockey — but it hurts so much more when you even things up at the end of the second period, then have to witness Brad Marchand throw a wrister from damn near the blue line and have it light the lamp.

You might be wondering: When was the last time a night this bad happened in Philly sports? Well, it was was back on October 16, 1983. On that night:

  • The Phillies lost the World Series to the Baltimore Orioles, getting blanked 5-0 in Game 5 for a 4-1 series win for the Orioles.
  • The Eagles lost 37-7 to the Dallas Cowboys, in a horrific game where Ron Jaworski went 7-for-20 for 172 yards and two interceptions. The Eagles finished the season an abysmal 5-11.
  • The Flyers lost their first game of the 1983 regular season 5-4 to the Rangers. They went on to have a good year, but were bounced much earlier in the playoffs than they should have.

Now we can add October 9, 2025 to the list of the worst single days in Philadelphia sports history. At least the teams made history?
