Chris Wondolowski wins 2012 MLS MVP

San Jose Earthquakes forward wins MLS MVP in an absolute landslide, picking up more than 90 percent of the vote from two separate voting blocs.

After tying Roy Lassiter's 16-year-old record for goals scored in a season and leading the San Jose Earthquakes to the Supporters' Shield, the only question around Chris Wondolowski's MVP candidacy seemed to be "how much would he win by?" Turns out, it was by a lot.

Wondolowski was named the 2012 MLS MVP on Thursday, winning in the weighted voting by more than 200 points. The 29-year-old got an astounding 97 percent of the media vote and 91 percent from the clubs. His fellow players were apparently the least impressed voting bloc, handing him "only" 71 percent of their vote. Thierry Henry was the only player to receive as much as 4 percent support from any group.

That all seems just about right for what will surely go down in MLS history as arguably the greatest offensive season. Not only did Wondolowski score 27 goals, but he also had a career-high seven assists. The combined total of 34 goals and assists were the most in league history, besting Lassiter’s 1996 campaign in which he scored 27 goals with four assists. Wondolowski’s goal total was more than Chivas USA scored as a team all year.
