Jermaine Jones takes MLS Player of the Week honors in his Colorado Rapids debut

Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

What makes for an MLS Player of the Week?

Most of the time, goals are essential. In fact, scoring multiple goals or scoring a goal and an assist usually shoots players right into contention.

But once again, a flair for the dramatic helped push one player over the top, and that was Jermaine Jones, who is SB Nation’s MLS Player of the Week for Week 7.

Jones, making his debut for the Rapids after a contentious divorce from the New England Revolution in the offseason, as well as serving a six-game MLS ban after making physical contact with a referee in the playoffs last year, scored a goal and had an assist in the Rapids’ 2-1 win over the New York Red Bulls on Saturday. In a snowstorm. There’s no way to know for sure, but having another blizzard game at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park probably helped Jones’ performance stand out.

Behind Jones, two scorers led the rest of the pack, with Justin Meram and Giovani dos Santos reaching the podium for the week.

Full results for Week 7, with first-place votes getting three points, second-place votes receiving two points and third-place votes earning a point each:
