Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Noons 2 Results - Josh Thomson Decisions Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante

Josh Thomson managed to win a unanimous decision over Gesias "JZ" Cavalcante despite repeatedly being in danger. In the first round Thomson scored a takedown but found himself trapped in what looked to be a deep arm-in guillotine for over a minute. Thomson survived, landed a flurry of punches before locking in a deep arm triangle choke before the round ended.

The second round saw Thomson control the round taking JZ’s back and landing several punches and generally controlling the action. In the final frame JZ was able to get a takedown and spend a large part of the round in mount. Although Thomson defended ably and took very little damage he clearly lost the round on position.

The judges scorecards read 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27 all for Thomson. It seems pretty inexcusable for a judge to give all three rounds to Thomson given the action in the third. While SB Nation scored the bout 29-28 Cavalcante it was easy to see giving Thomson the first two rounds, but all three is somewhat absurd.

Regardless, the former champion had his hand raised and will move closer to a chance for a rubber match with current champion Gilbert Melendez.
