MMA Fighting caught up with Randy Couture’s attorney Sam Spira to get more details on Randy Couture’s apparent retirement announcement on Twitter last night. Spira made it clear that the decision is anything but final:
Randy Couture’s Lawyer Says UFC Star’s Retirement Not Official
“It’s not an official announcement,” Couture’s attorney Sam Spira told MMA Fighting on Tuesday night.
Spira said that the posting was simply the fighter responding to fans and reiterating what Spira told MMA Fighting back in September, and what Couture himself later said in November: that he might have fought for the last time.
This is very strange, it almost feels like one of those situations where the athlete is ready to retire from action but those who are making money off of him (mind you, Spira absolutely earns his money) aren’t ready for him to stop earning. I don’t know if that is the case for sure, but when Couture says it’s time and his lawyer is saying it’s still up in the air, that just seems strange.
