In the second fight of UFC 128: Shogun vs. Jones, New Jersey's Nick Catone took on last-minute replacement and Matt Serra-student Costantinos Philippou. Catone was originally slated to face Dan Miller, but Miller was promoted to face Nate Marquardt after Yoshihiro Akiyama stayed in Japan due to the tsunami tragedy. This bout was contested at a catchweight of 195lbs.

In round one, Catone’s wrestling took over, but not until later in the round. The two traded weak shots early until Catone forced Philippou to the cage where he eventually secured a takedown. Some nice ground and pound eventually cut Philippou open right at the end of the first round.
The second was another good round for Catone. A couple of monster knees from the clinch landed including a single leg take down. Philippou wasn’t crushed in the round, but didn’t score nearly as much as Catone. The layoff for Catone has so far shown in his stand-up, but hasn’t stopped him from winning the first two rounds.
In the third round, it was more of the same. Catone was able to control the fight. Philippou was never really in this.
