VIDEO: Brian Stann’s Candor, Commitment On Display Ahead Of UFC 130
Most of these 'pro-sumer' style documentaries fighters take part in during the lead up to their fights offer limited information or appeal. Fighters, by no fault of their own, often lead spartan and uninteresting existences prior to big bouts. I'm sure Brian Stann's life can feel that way as he heads into UFC 130 where he faces Jorge Santiago. But this documentary series feels different.
It’s short form, so it isn’t hugely explanatory. And certainly it turns the usual corners touches on the training, sacrifice, risk, reward, effort and outcome. What usually separates the quality of these short-form videos are obviously the tech and tech team involved, but more importantly the investment by the subject.
In this video, Stann adds dimension to his identity. Here is Brian Stann the father, the husband, the regular guy, all in settings authentic and low-key enough to be believable. The UFC middleweight also hints at disagreements with his publishing company and how he won’t push his book to avoid making them money. I’m not certain what the back story is there, but him simply alluding to it is enough to generate interest in this video’s content.
Part of making an interesting video is being an interesting person. It isn’t merely dimensions that make Stann more compelling, although that’s part. It’s that he’s invested in himself, his worldview and communication skills to make those dimensions unique, appealing and sufficiently intriguing. The video underscores Stann’s level-headedness and makes non-exploitative use of his candor. All the right touches, really. I highly recommend it.
