UFC 131 Results: Nick Ring Beats Up, Chokes Out James Head

Nick Ring and James Head meet in the fourth fight of the evening at middleweight. Nick Ring was a member of the Ultimate Fighter 11 cast, and defeated Riki Fukuda in a controversial split decision in his UFC debut. James Head is making his UFC debut.Our referee for this bout is Herb Dean.

ROUND 1 - Ring throws two quick kicks. And another. And another. And another. Head checks a kick. Ring’s head kick falls short. Thai plum for Ring. Lands a knee to the midsection. And another. A final knee to the head. Head steps in with a straight right. Ring goes to the body with a left hand. Ring throwing lots of leg kicks. Ring with a takedown, and he moves straight into side control. Herb Dean warns him not to grab the shorts. Ring moves into north-south momentarily before Head rolls back into guard. Ring loses position and we’re back standing. Knee lands for head. One-two lands for Ring. A right hand sends Ring down to the mat. Head engages. Ring works his way back to his feet, but Head is capitalizing on a dazed fighter. Ring with a shot to the midsection that seems to halt Head. Right hand hurts Ring. Knees from the clinch. Ring drives through a desperate takedown. Head taking deep breaths from the bottom. Ring lands a couple punches as the round ends.

ROUND 2 - Head checks a leg kick to open. Ring lands one anyway. Ring drives in for a single. Heads grabs a single, but allows Ring to move into side control. Short elbow from Ring. Ring traps Head in an inverted triangle from the top. Let’s go. Landing punches to the midsection. Ring in north-south now, landing punches to the body. Head recovers to half-guard. Ring stands, which allows Head to return to his feet. Ring drives in for another takedown and completes it against the fence. Head looks tired. Small cut on the outside of his left eye. Ring landing lots of punches and elbows from guard. Head turtles up, Ring jumps on the back, and Head sends him flying forward. Ring gets on top after the scramble. Head’s face is bleeding crimson. Herb Dean stops the bout to allow a doctor check. Dean tells Head the doctor cannot stop the bleeding, asks if he can see and if he wants to fight. Head affirms that he does. Fight restarts in side control. Short elbows from Ring. The blood’s dripping right into Head’s eyes. Head trying to turn into a turtle, but Ring forces him back down. Ring landing punches to the midsection as he moves into north-south. He has Head’s left arm pinned down.

ROUND 3 - Head looks exhausted. Ring works him back into the fence. Left hand for Ring. Ring drops under and completes a single leg takedown. Head grabs a guillotine, but has to let it go. Full guard. Head working wrist control on the left side. Head’s cut is open again. Left hands to the midsection from standing. Head turtles over. Left hands from Ring. Head turns into half-guard. Big elbows from Ring. Ring trying to pin the right arm down with his knee. Short elbows. Head regains full guard. Ring moves into side control. North-south. Halfway through the round. Short elbows from Ring. Rogan notes that Head is in survival mode. This is a beating. Ring locks up a choke and finishes it with no hooks.
