Offseason NASCAR News Recap: Week 2
↵So to help you catch up, here’s the latest in our offseason recaps:
↵• NASCAR teams participated in a Goodyear tire test at Daytona, the first action on the newly repaved 2.5-mile surface. Drivers praised the tire and said the pavement will make the Daytona 500 look like a race at Talladega with a three-wide pack of cars unable to pull away from one another.
↵• During the tire test, NASCAR official Robin Pemberton confirmed that pit crews will no longer use a catch can man during pit stops. A self-venting fuel can used in the Truck Series last year will be instituted across all three NASCAR national series starting at Daytona.
↵• Brazilian driver Nelson Piquet Jr., formerly of Formula One, will drive a Camping World Truck Series entry full time for Kevin Harvick Inc., the team announced Monday. Piquet is more famous worldwide than most NASCAR drivers due to his F1 career.
↵• Penske Racing announced Wednesday that former Sam Hornish Jr. crew chief Travis Geisler has a new role as the organization’s competition director. Hornish and his No. 77 team are not expected to return to Sprint Cup next season given its lack of sponsorship.
↵• Kasey Kahne will drive the No. 4 car for Red Bull Racing next season, the team said Tuesday. NASCAR agreed to Red Bull’s request to switch from the No. 82 to Kahne’s preferred No. 4 for 2011.
↵• Turner Motorsports announced Monday that farming technology company Brandt will sponsor Justin Allgaier’s No. 31 Nationwide Series entry next year. This is the first foray into NASCAR sponsorship for Brandt.
