Just how hard is it to be a “qualifying specialist” like Landon Cassill?
Attention iRacing Drivers: Win Landon Cassill’s Money
If you race on iRacing.com, you may have the chance to find out.
Cassill, the Sprint Cup start-and-park driver who successfully qualified on speed in 11 of the 13 races he attempted this year, has announced an iRacing.com contest open to anyone who wants to participate.
The “Landon Cassill Qualifying Challenge” offers $1,000 to whoever posts the fastest lap in the Dec. 18 online event.
Each entrant will race the same setup around Charlotte Motor Speedway; whoever has the fastest single lap gets Cassill’s money.
It’s sort of a thank-you contest for the online racers who helped him prepare for the upcoming qualifying sessions during the season.
Cassill credits time spend on iRacing as key to his qualifying success this season.
“Each week I would host a session at the upcoming Sprint Cup Series track on iRacing and work on qualifying runs,” Cassill said. “Eventually there were 40 to 50 drivers that would join the session and challenge my qualifying skills, so I thought it would be cool to create a competition to see who is the real iRacing Qualifying Specialist.”
The entry fee is $10, and drivers must first make it through the Dec. 17 preliminary rounds (which could be as many as 200 people) until the top 40 fastest drivers are picked.
Though the top prize is $1,000, each finishing position down to 20th gets at least some prize money (Cassill is putting up a total purse of more than $2,000).
