Though the calendar has changed, it’s not too late to look back at last season. SB Nation is counting down its top 15 most-viewed NASCAR stories of 2010 during the first two weeks of January.
No. 14: Dale Earnhardt Jr. Explains Why He Won’t Tweet
Let’s be perfectly honest: The fact this story is No. 14 on the countdown is depressing for modern-day journalism.
But it’s true. The profile pieces and opinion columns that took hours to write stood no chance against this Feb. 19 blurb about why Dale Earnhardt Jr. won’t use Twitter.
About 20 percent of the traffic on this story came from Google, which is likely from people searching for Earnhardt Jr.‘s Twitter account (he doesn’t have one). The other 80 percent apparently just wanted to know why he doesn’t tweet or use Facebook.
It’s an interesting nugget for Earnhardt Jr. fans – and obviously, everyone here at SB Nation is glad you read it – but it’s one of those simple things that only takes five minutes to write.
If most writers could have their way, I think they’d like the stories that took the most work to get the most clicks (as kind of a reward for the effort). It’s a bit sobering to discover some of the most popular stories have nothing to do with... well, anything, really.
And, by the way, there are several similar stories yet to be revealed on the top 15 list.
